Born into a distinguished theatrical family, Vanessa Redgrave trained for the stage at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
In 1966, Redgrave was nominated for her first Best Actress Oscar for her work in Morgan!. Subsequently, and somewhat ironically, she began eschewing conventional parts and became noted for her uncompromising approach to difficult and even controversial roles. She was again Oscar-nominated for her performances in 1968's Isadora and 1971’s Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1978 Redgrave won an Academy Award for her work in the title role of Julia, opposite Jane Fonda. Redgrave is currently co-director of the Moving Theatre Company. She recently co-produced a three-day drama, dance and music festival, Kthimi (The Return) in Macedonia and Kosovo under the auspices of UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
A lifetime supporter of Amnesty International, Redgrave is deeply committed toward advancing asylum causes and recently organised an event, For the Worldwide Right to Asylum held at the United Nations, New York. This event was co-sponsored by Amnesty International.
