Widely regarded as Ireland’s pre-eminent living painter, Louis le Brocquy was born in Dublin in 1916. Self-taught, le Brocquy moved to London in 1946, and became prominent in the contemporary art scene. He began to exhibit internationally and in 1958 he married the Irish painter Anne Madden.

Acclaimed for his evocative heads of literary and artistic figures, including Yeats, Joyce, Bacon and Beckett, in recent years he has undertaken an impressive series of oil paintings, watercolours and lithographs entitled Procession. Noted for his many collaborations with Irish writers, including Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney, le Brocquy is perhaps best known for his lithographic brush drawings for Thomas Kinsella’s renowned translation of the Táin in 1969. He is the first and only living artist to be included in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Le Brocquy and Madden have been members of Amnesty International since its foundation and were instrumental in organising 1982's Artists For Amnesty Art Auction, benefiting Amnesty International's Irish section. Both contributed to the highly successful ‘In the Time of Shaking: Irish Artists for Amnesty International’ exhibition and sale in May 2004. Le Brocquy lives and works in Ireland and is represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin.
