Born in San German, Puerto Rico in 1967, Benicio del Toro moved to Mercersberg, Pennsylvania at the age of 13. He left his studies at the University of California in San Diego in order to purse acting at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York, then winning a scholarship to The Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting.
Known for his character roles, del Toro emerged in the mid 1990s as one of the most charismatic actors of his age. His first job was on Miami Vice in 1987; however, his big screen career got off to a slow start. After starring in many overlooked films in the early 1990s, del Toro has gone on to star in films including The Usual Suspects, Swimming With Sharks, Basquiat, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Traffic, Snatch, and 21 Grams. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards, winning the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in Traffic.
Del Toro is a vocal advocate of Human Rights, lending his voice to the cause of raising public awareness, and is a long-term supporter of Amnesty International's work, most recently signing a petition to bring an end to the unjust imprisonment of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other democracy activists in Myanmar.
