Born in New Jersey in 1967, Sorvino is the daughter of actor Paul Sorvino. At first eschewing the family trade, she earned a degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University but upon graduation, Sorvino moved to New York to pursue an acting career. Since then, Sorvino has shocked and delighted audiences with her varied character roles.
Working as a production assistant until 1992, Sorvino first her found leading role in the low-budget, independent film, Amongst Friends. 1994 saw her appear in Barcelona and Quiz Show, but it was Woody Allen's 1996 film, Mighty Aphrodite, which brought Sorvino an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and steady work in Hollywood ever since, including Beautiful Girls and the block-buster, Mimic. In 1997 Sorvino earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the made-for-TV movie, Norma Jean and Marilyn, with follow up performances in At First Sight and an acclaimed role in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam.
Sorvino has recently signed up as an ambassador to Amnesty International in order to lend her support to the Stop Violence Against Women campaign. She is now collaborating with Amnesty International officials to establish rape as a war crime and a crime against humanity in every country around the world.
