
2005 Award Ceremony

The 2005 Ambassador of Conscience award ceremony
was held in the National Stadium, Santiago de Chile, on Sunday 26th
February when U2 and Paul McGuinness were presented with the Award
by Chilean President Elect Dr. Michelle Bachelet. They were individually
presented with a parchment citation of the award and a statuette
entitled ‘Abrazo de Dos’ by Marcela Romagnoli. The event
included a reading of ‘From the Republic of Conscience’
by renowned Chilean actor, Nissim Sharim. President Elect Dr. Michelle
Bachelet was also presented with a framed, signed copy of the image
from Paula Allen’s exhibition ‘Flowers in the Desert’,
which is also available as a limited edition poster from Art for
Amnesty.

Representatives of a number of human rights organisations
- including La Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos
Desaparecidos (Detainees Disappeared Relatives Association),
the Fundación de Ayuda Social de las Iglesias Cristianas
(Christian Churches' Social Aid Foundation) and the Movimiento
de Integración y Liberación Homosexual (Homosexual
Integration and Liberation Movement) - were also present at
the event and were presented with copies of the poem ‘From
the Republic of Conscience’, signed by Nobel Laureate Seamus
Heaney.
