Václav
Havel, first president of the Czech Republic and former 'Prisoner
of Conscience' became the first Amnesty
International ‘Ambassador of Conscience’
at the 2003 Award Ceremony held in Dublin on November 13th. The
award was presented to Václav Havel by British actress Vanessa
Redgrave following a Gala performance of Brian Friel's play Aristocrats.
The title for the Award was inspired by a poem
written by Nobel Literature Laureate Seamus Heaney to commemorate
the 25th Anniversary of Amnesty
International in 1986. In the mythical ‘Republic’
written of by Seamus Heaney public leaders must ‘weep to atone
for their presumption to hold office’ |
